Shelly Smith, M.A.

Family Advocate and Dementia Care navigator

About

Supporting a loved one through dementia diagnosis and treatment is one of the most challenging experiences a family can face. Making difficult and sometimes heart-wrenching decisions; learning about treatment options with their risks and benefits; communicating with medical providers; coordinating care; navigating uncertainty, grief, and exhaustion—it can all feel like far too much to carry alone. From 2020 to 2025, I supported and cared for my partner, Andrew, through his diagnosis and treatment for Early Onset Alzheimer's disease. It was the most difficult experience of my life, made even harder by the isolation and overwhelm that so many caregivers experience. At the end of 2025, I was connected with a memory care facility that could care for Andrew. I still see him daily and love him deeply. And, as I have emerged from the most intensive years of caregiving and regained the capacity to look outward again, I have become increasingly aware of how many caregivers are trying to navigate this journey without the support they need.My professional background is in Organizational Development and project management. Over the past 5 years, I have learned to use my professional skillset to navigate the world of medical care, social services, high stakes communication with multiple providers; and difficult decisionmaking. Now I bring both my professional experience and my lived experience as a caregiver to support individuals and families facing dementia and other complex care challenges. Whether you need help understanding options, coordinating care, making difficult decisions, or simply having an experienced thought partner by your side, my goal is to help you feel more informed, supported, and less alone. If you would like to discuss your situation or learn more about how I work, please reach out.
